  14. Phone.app is a handy little application that we've developed internally at
  15. Hutchison. We're releasing it as shareware, with a low-low price of $X.XX.
  16. Feel free to download it and play around with it. It's pretty cool... features
  17. include intra-text hypertext buttons for phone dialing (not implemented yet...
  18. see the Q+A) and NeXTmail-ing, customizable colors, memorized open documents,
  19. free-format text searching and database format, fast case insensitive
  20. searching, etc. It's really worth every penny! (And hey, you did say you
  21. wanted inexpensive software!).

  27. Here's a short Q+A from the help panel:

  29. Q:  What is Phone.app?
  30.  
  31. A:  It's a phonebook manager which can read and write ASCII plain text
  32.     files. If you're currently using perl or some other command line tool to
  33.     read phonebook files, then this application can live side-by-side with
  34.     your tool, and you'll not have to change your file format one bit.

  36. Q:  Gee, that's cool. Are you sure about the file format thing?

  38. A:  Well, we're pretty sure! By default Phone.app is looking for records
  39.     like this:

  55.     As you can see, you don't have to do anything special with your records.
  56.     They can be in pretty much any order. Phone uses some intelligent
  57.     algorithms to figure out what's what.  You can set this application up
  58.     so that it reads colon delimited files, or whatever!

  60. Q:  So, why is plain text better than binary?
  61.  
  62. A:  Because you can read it with the tool of your choice. You can also bring
  63.     your phonebooks to other computers (ie. running DOS) and read them there
  64.     if you need to. It also allows Phone to reside in your system along with
  65.     perl or bourne shell scripts which read your ASCII phonebook file. Plain
  66.     text lets everyone get along fine.

  68. Q:  Ok, enough about the file format junk. How do I use this thing?
  69.  
  70. A:  It's pretty easy. Make a new phonebook, and hit the "Insert" menu item
  71.     to add a new record. Phone will search case insensitively for records
  72.     that match your search. You can search forwards or backwards based on
  73.     the contents of your query field.

  75. Q:  Does this app do anything else?
  76.  
  77. A:  You can set the color of each of your open phonebooks to help you find
  78.     them amidst the break grey windows that abound on NEXTSTEP. While we
  79.     figured it would make Steve Jobs have a hemorrhage, we found that a
  80.     small grey window was often hard to locate. So, we allow you to drag and
  81.     drop in the color of your choice. You, the user, are being allowed to be
  82.     a victim of your own poor taste ;-).

  84. Q:  Very funny. Do you expect me to pay you for this?

  96. A:  Minor upgrades and bugfixes are free. We use this app internally and
  97.     continue to upgrade it and add features. This is the first public
  98.     release of this app, so there's bound to be more.

  100. Q:  Are there any secret hidden features?
  101.  
  102. A:  Yes, but if we told you what they were, they wouldn't be secret and you
  103.     wouldn't have any fun. :-P.

  105. Q:  When are you going to implement telephone dialing?
  106.  
  107. A:  As soon as someone sends us some public domain phone tones, or we get
  108.     our hands on a digital microphone.

  110. Q:  OK... by the way, those are pretty cool color wells. Much more svelte
  111.     than the usual breed.

  117. A:  Wait! There's more! Phone can be programmed to use hints when it parses
  118.     your plain text. We're not ready yet to disclose this feature to
  119.     everyone, but if you really need it, let us know. Using hints will help
  120.     it determine what's what... it already uses some that are pre-programmed.
